Stone Balustrade Restoration to Pickering Bridge, Hovingham Estate, North Yorkshire

Hovingham Bridge Hovingham Estate

Pickering Bridge sits within the historic Hovingham Estate in the village of Hovingham, North Yorkshire. As part of essential conservation works to this traditional estate structure, CG Building & Restoration Ltd carried out the careful dismantling, repair and reconstruction of the bridge’s damaged stone balustrade.

The right‑hand side balustrade had been knocked over by cattle, and upon inspection it was found that approximately seventy‑five percent of the balusters were reinforced concrete replacements installed at some point in the bridge’s history. These concrete balusters were severely eroded and damaged, requiring full replacement. New stone balusters were manufactured to match the original profile, along with replacement sections of the base rail and balustrade where stone had deteriorated beyond repair.

The entire length of the stone balustrade was then reconstructed using a combination of newly crafted stone components and retained original sections. This included the raking end sections, ensuring the bridge was restored to its former architectural character and structural integrity.

This project highlights our expertise in stone balustrade restoration, traditional masonry repairs and heritage conservation across the Hovingham Estate and wider North Yorkshire region.
